Conflict and Peace Monitoring Survey Results
BEFORE links early warning data to concrete preventative action and therefore established a monitoring system based on expert knowledge: the BEFORE Conflict and Peace Monitoring Survey. The survey presently focuses on West Africa, where BEFORE is engaged in projects in Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
Renowned experts assess the situation in the countries and their political sub-entities on a scale from 0 = stable peace to 10 = outright war. Using the aforementioned scale, the experts also provide forecasts on how the situation will look like 6 months from the present moment. Likewise, in order to detect windows of opportunity for fostering peace, they judge the peacebuilding potential in each country and its administrative sub-entities, again using a scale that ranges from 0 to 10, where 0 means no potential at all and 10 equals a very high potential.
Over sixty experts filled out the third questionnaire of BEFORE’s Conflict & Peace Monitoring Survey during May 2011. The results of the latest Peace and Conflict Monitoring Survey for West Africa are displayed below in thematic maps. Only the results of countries rated by at least six experts are shown.

BEFORE would like to once more thank our experts for taking time to participate in this exercise. It is due to their engagement that addressing conflicts before they turn violent becomes possible and windows of opportunity for sustainable peacebuilding can be identified in time.
