2008 Elections in Guinea-Bissau
Despite one incident of post-elections violence, the people of Guinea-Bissau came out in strong force to vote for their leaders. A number of global media outlets, including BBC News, reported peaceful National Assembly elections and nearly 70% voter turn-out. It’s an exciting achievement for a country that has only elected three other National Assemblies since it gained independence 35 years ago.
The people of Guinea-Bissau have a vision for their country: freedom from political strife and instability. Voters said they were choosing officials that would end the drug-trafficking that is plaguing the country. The natural growing pains of a country are complex, but the people of Guinea-Bissau are showing the world they want a future of peace. BEFORE is committed to assisting the people in Guinea-Bissau in their movement toward stability and growth.
